ABOUT CQS

Judy Carmody, Ph.D.

Judy Carmody, Ph.D., is the founder and Principal Consultant of Carmody Quality Solutions, LLC, an innovative pharmaceutical quality and QA consulting agency that provides services to the pharmaceutical, biologics, and medical device industries.

Scientific understanding underscores her unique approach to solving the most challenging quality or analytical issues. Her work in applied technology, marketing, bench chemistry, validation, quality management, and several leadership roles provides the basis for Judy’s approach to developing custom-crafted solutions that fulfill her vision of connecting everyday biotech and pharmaceutical quality processes and procedures with the strategic needs of her client’s business.

Judy has 25+ years of specific expertise driving vision in operations, quality assurance, control, systems, validation, and analytical development. She has held quality leadership positions at several pharma/biopharma companies and built quality management systems for both start-up and Fortune 500 companies, which have undergone multiple FDA inspections with no FDA 483s issued. She is the former founder and president of Avatar Pharmaceutical Services, an FDA-registered contract research organization and registered manufacturer that provided quality, submission-ready customized analytical services in compliance with cGMP. When Vertex Pharmaceuticals acquired Avatar in 2010, she became its Director of CMC and QBD, and she established and maintained the Commercial QC laboratory and associated quality systems.

Prior to Avatar, Judy spent 10 years in the (bio)pharmaceutical industry, developing methods for small molecules and oligonucleotides, and managing QC, analytical, and validation groups. In addition to this solid grounding in pharmaceuticals, she worked at Waters Corporation’s Applied Technology and Marketing groups where she developed novel separations methods with colleagues and (bio)pharmaceutical customers. At Waters, she brought numerous new technologies to market through published papers and technical presentation both at worldwide conferences and leading (bio)pharmaceutical companies.
Judy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Worcester State University, and a Master of Science degree and a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts.
